Although the play won a host of awards, I had not heard about it. So, when I pulled The History Boys off the shelf at Blockbuster, it was because it had history in the title and because the case copy mentioned the BBC. (You can see that I make my Blockbuster choices based on firm criteria.) Anyway, I'm a sucker for teacher films, and The History Boys is a terrific teacher film. If you need to take a break from grading, go round to your local video store and burn a couple of hours feeling good.

- Research NotesSo, the sabbatical is coming to an end. "Parading as Millionaires" was accepted by Enterprise & Society, and the "Bank Examiner's Tale" is at a journal. The Montana half of the research for Erastus D. Edgerton is complete and with it my Bradley Fellowship. What remains is the National Archives and New York.
British high schools and boys wearing these traditional uniforms: young adults discovering what sex is about, being confrontated with homosexuality, I always felt a special attraction. And so I discovered "browsing around on the internet" the dvd from the 2006 movie, and I did like it so much. Happy to receive an email today announcing from 20 Dec 2007 it is played again in London. Really want to see that and I do hope, as usual at West End, the play will be better than the movie. I will specially come to London, it's a must see for me!

I saw this on Broadway last summer and it was mostly the same cast as the BBC film. It was great - the tension between teaching for real life success and success on "the tests" that determine your immediate (and sometimes long-term) academic success.
